Mathematical Metaphors

Infinity plays a big part in the study of Buddhism. The only language that can adequately work with infinity is mathematics, calculus specifically. Osho said: "A Total religion, my trimurti ... contains mathematics (the purest scince), music (the purest art), and meditation (the purest religion)." (paraphrased from The Dhammapada: The Way of the Buddha, Vol. 1 Chapter 2: An Empty Chair). (We will forego a discussion of "purest" anything -- afterall, Osho intended to be the most controversial person who ever lived.) This is a very curious statement & Osho did not elaborate at all on what he meant by mathematics.

I play with calcilus mostly. My kids laugh at the collection of math books that occupy all sorts of strange places in my house, along side Gary Larson. I solve equations for fun. I also roll equations around in my mind as metaphor for difficult Buddhist concepts. So these pages are for fun & not in any way formal.
