Reinforcing Qualities: Revelation

The most important take-away is NEVER concentrate of any of the reinforcing qualities. A steady practice of mindfulness invariably results in reinforcing qualities but the moment rapture or tranquillity become an objective, they become impossible to experience (in my experience). Mindfulness is noting what occurs in the flow of consciousness. That flow includes continuous, transient thoughts & sensations. Reinforcing qualities are simply a wonderful part of that continuous flow. The key here is impermanence (anicca). All of the originating objects are impermenent. The moment any object is clung to, that causes another key Buddhist characteristic, suffering (dukkha). Why? Trying to stop impermenence by clinging only burns the "hand" as the object undergoes dissolution.

Hence mindfulness is the concentrated effort to watch the flow of originating objects AND not make any effort to stop the process or stem dissolution. So what happens when we watch? The first reinforcing quality is translated as investigation. In my practice the term is unsuitable. Investigation implies an active, reaching observation. I prefer the term revelation. By watching carefully without trying to hold on, we actually witness the unfolding process of creation. Without investigating, just watching, the mysteries of origination & dissolution are revealed.

Mindfulness is zeroing in on the nexus of creativity. Contrary to Buddhist tradition I gave personified my experience of the nexus with a secret Pali name. In my own case whatever I have been studying or working on becomes material on the workbench of my mind. It is something like the fairy tale of the Elves & the Shoemaker. I lay out the materials then go into mindful meditation. At the nexus of creativity, the solutions presents itself as various revelations -- The Elves assemble shoes from the materials. BTW this happens most often at around 3AM.

Focusing on the problem or solution with ordinary consciousness blocks out the nexus of creativity. Quieting ordinary thought process by watching the flow without clinging allows revelations at the nexus. The hard part is the moments of inspiration are genuine aha's and trigger a flurry of recognition & response. I can get lost in the revelation for awhile. However, the experience is reinforcing & intensifies my effort to concentrate on the flow of consciousness & creativity at the nexus.

Poets often name the experience at the nexus & refer to the personification as their muse. In Jungian psychology, inner work involves dialogue with the personifications at the nexus. Poetry & inner work involve skillful interaction at the nexus of creativity so as to engage but not superimpose conscious mental activity on the flow.
