Reinforcing Qualities: Rapture

Rapture for me is the physical sensation of being at the nexus of creativity. It is for me less impermanent than revelation -- lasts longer. The suttas refer to thrills & chills, bubbly sensations of ecstacy. At times I have felt light, almost floating. Other times the air seems to be alive with whirling flower-like mandalas. I find it difficult to be still in a state of rapture. The urge to dance in some way is almost overwhelming. Literally everything inside & out comes to life as if flowering.

Rapture is particularly difficult to note because it can be so intense. For me rapture is the most intense joy I have experienced. It is as if some hidden reservoir inside opens up & floods consciousness. But like every finite experience, rapture is temporary. Because rapture is so intense, its impermanence can be quite a shock. My early experiences were marred by trying to get back to rapture in the next sitting.

Part of impermanence is uncontrollability. Clearly I have no control over any conscious process that I observe. Rapture like any originating object undergoes dissolution. It is a great teacher in this regard because it can neither be brought on nor prevented from dissolution by will.

So the discipline is to note what is happening & the transitions without clinging. In so doing impermanence becomes very clear. In the panorama of conscious experience, rapture is thrilling & reinforcing. By witnessing rapture with precision, it is a revelation.

Because each person is unique, it is critical to avoid preconceptions about rapture. Not only is rapture unique to the individual, each experience may be unique within the individual. Simply apply the discipline & watch what happens. Also rapture & other jhanic experiences are far more common on retreats. I've done 5, 10 & 30 day silent retreats. For me the most intense rapture occurred on 10 day retreats. On a 30 day retreat, 3rd & 4th jhanas predominate for me.
